Story Written by Emerson Marine

Marooned by Howard Pyle

All hope is lost. I have been marooned on an island not even I can recognize. The sky seems to be burn permanently gray, and the sand is always hot. I have been here not long, and already I am hungry. As I sit here on this shore, I wonder, why did this happen to me? Why was I abandoned on this tiny circle of land? What did I do to deserve this? Why do I have to die? I think back to my days on the ship, my days as a part of the crew. I was a new sailor, only a few weeks on the boat, when the others realized I was different. I could do any job given to me; no task was too big, or too dangerous. I was fearless, a real pirate they called me. I could do anything. I would climb to the highest of the sails. I would scrape even the farthest barnacles of the sides, and steer in the strongest gale. You could go so far to say that I was the most important member of the crew. Yet why was I marooned, why was I shamed? The sun was slowly going down, but the sky stayed its dark gray. The haunting questions still rang in my ears, gnawing at my tired mind. How could they, I thought, how could they leave me?  Maybe it was a blunder of my own, a mistake that decided my terrible fate. But no, a mistake so large that required a fatal punishment I would remember making. And then it hit me, like waves hit the sand. They were sick of me, sick of the fact that I was stronger than them, sick that I was better than them, a better pirate. So they found a way to get rid of me, forever. They knew I would never come back. And with that truth came anger that filled my heart and mind, burning me inside. I wanted to hurt the others on the ship, hurt them like they hurt me. And then I remembered. I'll never reach them. There was nothing I could do to satisfy my revenge. I sank to the ground, and looked at the backs of those who betrayed me, looked out to sea.
